Apollo

This was a personal project that was inspired by my love for space exploration and all of the kid's toys that clutter our basement.  The goal was to make a piece that felt like you can reach out and touch - little imperfections, smudges and its it made of wood?  Why yes it is.

A love letter to space exploration, and the child-like wonder it inspires.

Project: Apollo

Process

With ample reference available and simple geometry, it was easy to get started on this project.  Beginning with some sketches, I got a good idea of how I wanted the ship to look.  I really like the sticker decals that you get with a Lego or Playmobil set so I found opportunities to try that out.  It was fun to try and make an already simple shape even more simple - the command and service module that is...The LEM is a different animal, but was able to incorporate the decals and make the ships feel like they belong together.

About the project

Inspired by my kid's toys and my love for space exploration, this project came to be.  It was also a great excuse to practice UV mapping.

Personal Project

Year: 2021

Software:  Cinema 4D R23,  Octane Renderer

Render Engine Switch

I made the switch to redshift from octane and decided a good way to learn the render engine was to revisit the lighting and texturing - way better than doing a youtube tutorial, right?  While revisiting this, I decided to push the tactile feeling that I was going for and make the sense of scale even more pronounced.  After finishing it up, I made a print of the image below and even got some stickers made of the LEM and Command module.
